THE MOST PERFECT Sugar Cookie Cutout Recipe

Ohhhh… about 6 years ago, my friends threw me a bridal shower, and one of my bridesmaids (ANGIE!) asked that everyone bring a couple favorite recipes for me to start out my new married life on the right foot.

I still regularly make many of those recipes, and one in particular deserves a major shout-out. My friend Alisa gave me her Grandma’s recipe for sugar cookie cut-outs… and they are PERFECT.

I’m telling you. They turn out perfect every time. And she’s given me permission to share her Grandma’s recipe with you! She said… and I quote ‘this recipe is meant to be shared’. Altogether now… AWWWWWWWW!

Recipe for THE MOST PERFECT sugar cookie cut-outs! {Sawdust and Embryos}

This is one of those no-fail recipe’s that NAILS IT every time.

The MOST PERFECT Christmas Sugar Cookie Cutouts {Sawdust and Embryos}

THE MOST PERFECT Sugar Cookie Cut-outs (aka Betty’s Santa Cookies)

  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 4.5 cups flour

Mix the first 3 ingredients well with an electric mixer. Then add the remaining ingredients and mix until well blended. Chill dough for a at least 2 hours. Roll 1/4-1/8” thick on floured surface. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes and put on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 8 minutes (or so)… I like to take mine out before the edges get golden brown, because I want mine soft instead of crunchy. And I let them sit on the pan for another good 5 minutes to continue cooking before putting them on a cooling rack.

I made up 3 batches last night, and we had a big Christmas-Cookie Decorating PARTAY with my girlfriends from our MUGGS Mommy Group, and everyone brought a different color frosting, and some sprinkles. It was PURE CHAOS and PURE FUN!

Now that it’s over and the girls (and Nick) are quietly napping, I think I’ll go have a stiff drink strong cup of coffee and stare blankly at the wall. Because I’m feeling a bit like this:

  1. Ug… I REALLY need to do some holiday baking. My neighbors might not get any gifts from me this year. :S Hopefully they understand! I LOVE a good sugar cookie recipe. I must give it a try when I can get my bum standing up and in a kitchen.

  3. Your cookies look great! I made shortbread cookies two weekends ago. I made them in the shape of trees and bears. The bears look like bunnies when turned upside down. Anyway, that’s the extent of my baking this year.

  4. I will have to try this I am getting together with my sister’s and my mom on monday have you ever tried using powdered sugar instead of flour to roll them out it keeps the sweet taste but not to sweet and doesn’t get that flour taste to them.

  6. It is so stressful to have a house full of rugrats…it always makes me anxious but in the end it is fun!
    I bake every year too a tradition my mom started. I make a signature chocolate/chip expresso cookie that has magical powers..according to my husband. lol. This my favorite time of the year! Merry Christmas!!

  7. With made almost this recipe with 3 grands this weekend mine called for sifted flour and to grease pan which I don’t remember doing the last time I baked these the first batch was a blob. By the last two batches you could actually tell what they were. I’m trying yours next year. Grands had a blast. All the Santa heads looked like pirates. Lol

    I bake every Christmas as well, but i more known for my cinnamon rolls . every year i get flooded with requests this year i am making 10 to 12 dozen for family and friends .

  9. I’ve been craving homemade sugar cookies this year…. so glad Alisa gave you the permission to share her grandma’s recipe!!! I wish that I would have gotten to meet her grandma, but I definitely got to eat her cookies :) And they were delicious! I have these bad boys chilling in my fridge right now :)

    This was one thing I wanted to make sure to do with my girls this year. I didn’t have a good recipe for sugar cookies so I tried this one. They turned out AMAZING! So moist and delicious! Thank you for sharing the recipe. It’s a Christmas miracle!! ;)

  13. EXCELLENT recipe! Just baked these with my girls this morning and they turned out beautiful. Very yummy. I cant keep their Dad or their Pawpaw out of them. I did throw in a tsp of almond extract along with the vanilla just for grins and giggles. Thank you so much for sharing. This is now my “go to” sugar cookie recipe.
